Despite Reference Materials (RM) for monitoring and control of the distribution and the use of New Psychoactive Substances (NPS), the rate of emergence of new compounds significantly outpaces the development of counterpart RM for efficient monitoring and testing of these substances – especially for new and extremely potent opiate type compounds.
Although sustained efforts to control new substances in Europe have been able to reduce the rate of new NPS – the drops have been justified by law enforcement operations in China leading to the closure of laboratories making these substances. The dynamics between the illegal market of NPS and efforts from authorities to control and monitoring them is the key driver for the main project goal:
To develop the scale up platform and proactive methods to more easily predict and monitor the flow of potent NPS onto the market. Through the platform, novel CRMs will be produced, as well as analytical methods for fast and safe verification of NPS - both for in vitro and in vivo applications. Key knowledge on the potency of emerging NPS (and trends) will also be generated.
The project will take advantage of our Predictive Parallel Production Platform (P4) and will allow to significantly increase the number of available RMs for NPS compounds in short time-to-market – disrupting with the current paradigm centred on reactive development of RMs after illegal producers introduce them in the market. The result will be an efficient, simultaneous and larger scale synthesis of several compounds, targeting reported NPS, and those which will likely appear in the market based on chemical similarities.
The second project goal is to improve our understanding of the NPS metabolism – aiming for early identification of metabolites originating from novel drugs of abuse; as in most cases, native NPS substance cannot be detected in urine and the intake must be proven based on metabolite findings, which have longer detection windows as they remain longer in the body.
The NPS Reform project is divided into 6 distinct work packages. The above PERT diagram shows the work flow and interdependencies of the various work packages.
